Grace Devotional
Week of November 2

In the three weeks leading to Thanksgiving, we will explore three aspects of faith: grace, generosity, and gratitude. You are encouraged to do these studies with a group or with your family as you prepare for worship each week.

This week's scripture comes from 2 Corinthians 12:7b-10. Take a moment to read the passage. Then reflect on the following questions.

1.      Paul talks about a “thorn in the flesh.” Commentators have drawn various conclusions about what this thorn could have been for Paul. It could have been a physical ailment or perhaps a mental health issue. As you consider your life, what “thorns in the flesh” have you dealt with?

2.      2020 has offered its own “thorn in the flesh.” How have the trials of this year challenged you?

3.      Paul appeals to God to help him overcome this “thorn” but ultimately comes to understand God’s power is made perfect in weakness. How is God’s power made perfect in your weaknesses? How is God’s power made perfect in the weaknesses that 2020 has caused for us?

4.      God’s grace is sufficient for Paul in dealing with his “thorn”. How is God’s grace sufficient for you?

5.      Spend some time reflecting on “grace moments” in your life. Where has God shown up and done things in your life that were unearned and unexpected? How can seeing those help cultivate an attitude of gratitude?

Looking ahead to this week’s sermon, read Exodus 16 and reflect on the manna and quail God provides as a gift of grace. How did the Israelites respond? How would you respond?
