Youth News

A big thank you to Ross Bretches, Tim & Laura Cooper, Allen Jenkins, and John Tonello for helping to chaperone our annual Youth Fall Retreat last weekend at the Misty Mountain Camp Resort in Crozet, VA.  In addition, a big thank you to all of those who volunteered to help bring items for our weekend.  We could not have done it without you.  We had a great time of fellowship and fun over the weekend.

Cakes, Pies, and More – Save yourself some time in the kitchen this Thanksgiving season and participate in the GABC Youth annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale on Sunday, November 18th at church.  We will have cakes, pies, and more on sale before Sunday School, in between Sunday School and Worship Service, and after church (if anything is left).  Please let B.J. know if you are able to help bake any items.

The Youth will be participating in TOP at Clay Park on Sunday, November 4th directly following the Worship Service.  We will meet in the Fellowship Hall.  We need youth, adults, and congregation members too!  This is a great opportunity to give back and help those in need.

On Friday, November 16th, the Youth will have their annual lock-in at the church.  This is for all Youth, grades 6-12.  Bring a friend with you!  We will meet at church at 8 PM that evening and pickup time is 7 AM the following morning.  The cost is $5 per youth attending.  As always, we need adults to help chaperone.  Please sign up with B.J. if you are interested.

The GABC Youth annual Christmas Party will be on Friday, December 7, 2018.  We will begin with dinner at the church followed by a Tacky Light Tour courtesy of James Limousine Charter Buses.  We have rented out a bus for the evening and will go look at all of the lights in the area.  We also may get to see Santa Claus himself at Al & Esther Thompson’s house.  Space is limited on the bus so sign up today with B.J.!

Thanksgiving Boxes

Please remember that the Genesis Sunday School Class will be collecting monies for Thanksgiving Boxes for those less fortunate at Thanksgiving.  Let’s see if we can fill at least 20 Thanksgiving boxes or more.  Make your checks payable to GABC for any amount and put “Thanksgiving boxes” on the memo line.  We are hoping we can get some good bargains as Thanksgiving gets closer and cut the cost, but as it stands now, each box will cost about $50-$65.  This includes a gift card for a turkey.

Alma Hunt Offering for State Missions

Please prayerfully consider a gift to state missions during the month of October.  Although you may give at any time, our emphasis is through October.  Alma Hunt “was a native Virginian who was known worldwide for her missions’ service and her unswerving dedication to the cause of Christ.”  The Alma Hunt offering is a joint venture of the Virginia Women’s Missionary Union and the Baptist General Association of Virginia that helps fund special ministries and outreach projects not funded through regular giving.  The statewide goal is $1,167,500.  There are envelopes for this offering in your pack of envelopes and in the pew racks.  The date on the envelopes (September 17-23) was the week of prayer for state missions, but please feel free to give at any time.

Linda Davidson on behalf of the Missions Committee

Virginia Baptist Disaster Response Team

Virginia Baptist Disaster Response Team – Virginia Baptists have been very busy feeding volunteers in North Carolina and now are in Georgia. They continue providing assistance with debris cleanup in North Carolina.  They also provide showers and laundry services for the volunteers.  Before demobilizing the feeding station in North Carolina, they had served more than 35,600 meals.  Georgia Baptists have requested the Disaster Response Team’s assistance.  Areas in Georgia may be without power for a month.  The Virginia team was expected to arrive on October 16.  Please be in prayer for the Virginia Baptist Response Team volunteers as they work to provide the help needed in hurricane damaged areas.  This is one way our donations to state missions are used.  If anyone is interested in volunteering in Georgia, please visit BGAVDR.org.
